SIMON LE RUEZ : As Poison Leaks Away // Eröffnung: August 19, 2010, 19h // Ausstellung : August 20, 2010 until September 5, 2010
Simon Le Ruez is a sculptor and installation artist who also uses drawing and video. His eclectic mix of materials produce scenarios where themes of longing, transgression, release and eroticism are played out, often underscored by dark humour, knowing impenetrability and an emotional charge. His playfulness includes a delight in the disquiet of a withheld knowledge that refutes our curiosity.
His recent sculptures are imbued with an air of the mythical. Evocations of abandoned piers, balconies and buildings conspire to unfold a complex narrative full of both emotional and aesthetic contradictions. These new works allude to forgotten places with nautical overtones and utopian aspirations; their ambiguous histories all the more complex through the suggestion of neglect and surprising context. In these works, Le Ruez resuscitates the desire of a bygone society through a celebration of the unwanted and imagined.
Varying forms of opposition and the notion of complicit conflicts infiltrate many of his works and as a means to fully implicate the viewer in these unfolding tensions, ideas are often explored in relation to particular spaces where the potential for movement and change is a pertinent one.
