Celebrating the life of Curtis Mayfield

On July 20th the industry celebrated Curtis Mayfield’s 70th birthday with a concert at the Lincoln Center. His 1972 sound track for Super Fly has inspired Hiphop music sonically, while the Blaxploitation movie itself, for better or for worse, has inspired the culture. Curtis was nothing short of master producer while his distinctive voice has spawned many imitators, but few duplicators. For his album, Chardonnay and OE, Synopse loosely based the project on the movie and sound track. So what better way to pay homage than to sample the master himself? “By My Side” samples Curtis vocal talents and instrumentation from “Blue Monday People”.
